My desktop wasn't showing my icons?

So, I turned my computer on and when i logged in my icons would not show up. I had to ctrl atl del, and then log in again. Usually when I log in they don't show up, but only for about 3 seconds then they come. I was wondering why this happens? The computer is fairly new and there is a 512mb graphics card put in. Thanks
