Will my compost work if it's been sterilized?

I'm trying to compost large amounts of plant material that I've steam distilled the essential oils out of. Basically, I've steam sterilized all the material before I put it into my compost tumblers, and it's not composting. Will the beneficial microbes show up on their own, or do they need to be present in the material?
